I won’t share to much on Honda of Chattanooga’s history in this post but with being in business for 50 years it has allowed the owner to acquire quite the collection of Vintage Honda motorcycles here at Honda of Chattanooga
that he grew up with over the years when his dad was running the business.
I decided to pick 2 out of the collection to share a few pictures with and information on. If people like seeing and reading the information on them I will pick out a couple more and do them on a weekly basis. Check out the other post from today on the 1979 Honda CBX1000

– 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo (CX500TC)
A little history on the Honda CX500 Turbo, it was released in 1982. The CX500 Turbo was only produced for one year, 1982. It was replaced by the CX650 Turbo (CX650TC) in 1983, which was also discontinued the same year. The turbocharger on the CX500T, at peak boost providing approximately 19 psi boost nearly doubles the power output of the engine.
Now on to the details about our 1982 Honda CX500T Turbo we have here at Honda of Chattanooga:
This particular CX500TC used to belong to our Parts Mgr back in the day, he is still around doing his thing as our Honda parts expert here at Honda of Chattanooga so it’s always interesting to here him talk about all of the time and money he sunk into it. He put a lot of blood sweat and tears into this bike until he started getting offers in cash exceeding $10,000 in the 1990’s. It was then that he decided he shouldn’t ride the bike any longer and sold it back to the dealership, he trading it in on a VFR so that he could actually ride a bike and not be afraid to scratch something with the history that this bike has.
All the work mentioned below was done in 1995. It had a total frame up restoration. The frame was powder coated (factory matching color), every bolt dremel tooled and polished. Polished aluminum pieces were chromed along with the handrail, oil filter cover among other items. Steel braided lines were also installed. The gauge cluster was replaced with a 1983 Honda CX650 Turbo cluster so that the speedometer would register at 140, instead of the 85 MPH speedometer on the 1982 model. It is serviced each year to keep the fluids fresh etc but has not been ridden regularly in 13 years. Every single nut and bolt was chrome plated, everything that was polished aluminum from the factory has been chromed. All factory black painted surfaces were powdercoated with a OEM factory oven quality powder. Taller rear tire to help give it a few more MPH on the top end over the speed limiter set by Honda. The swing arm was polished and clear coated so it wasn’t the factory “rough” aluminum finish. The original gas tank and fairings were replaced with an all new OEM gas tank and fairings, the motorcycle never went down or had any “real” damage – the previous owner who is our parts manager was just very picky and wanted the bike to be perfect when he still owned it. We have all of the parts receipts etc from when all of the new OEM Honda pieces were replaced.
This 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo is nicer than the original Honda CX500T when it was released new from Honda. The pictures don’t show how immaculate this motorcycle really is. With only 2,500 units made in 1982 the value of this Honda will only continue to rise.
Everything we have here at Honda of Chattanooga is For Sale so if you’re interested in some more information on the CX500 Turbo please contact me. Kevin@HondaofChattanoogaTN.com
